Part of Colinton's rich history was the Caledonian Railway's line between central Edinburgh and the outlying village of Balerno. Colinton Station was a stop on this line. The train was hauled along the twisty uphill route by a small sturdy loco, which earned the affectionate name of the Balerno Pug.
The Pug is commemorated in our hand built scale model. The model comes with a poster with information about the Pug and the former railway line.

Much of the former railway line follows the route of the Water of Leith, Edinburgh's other river. The railway track was dismantled years ago but now forms part of the Water of Leith Walkway, a wonderful leisure resource for Edinburgh residents. Just beyond Slateford, the walkway enters leafy Colinton Dell, and from there onwards it proceeds through woodlands with the river rarely out of sight, and with the Pentland hills often glimpsed in the distance. Along the way traces of the former railway can still be seen. In Colinton, the platform of the long closed station can still be seen under the viaduct at Spylaw Park.
